Who’s Behind the War on Obama’s Intelligence Pick

March 10, 2009 § 10 Comments

‘No presidential appointment has brought more controversy than that of Charles “Chas” Freeman, whom Obama tapped to head the National Intelligence Council. Leading the charge against Freeman is Steven Rosen, a former director of AIPAC awaiting trial on espionage charges, who has a long history of attacking and undermining anybody he deems hostile to Israel’. Here is Max Blumenthal on the Israel Lobby’s first Obama-era attack.

Update: The lobby has triumphed again. Freeman failed the loyalty test, and has hence been thrown under the bus. Notorious Israel-firster Chuck Schumer is taking credit ; according to Greg Sargent it was Rahm Emanuel and Schumer working together, but of course they had the full force of the lobby behind them.

Oh, well, three guesses and the first two don’t count…. That’s grade school speak for “duh”. The Holocaust Industry is gunning for him for approving of Meirsheimer and Walt’s position. If Obama follows form, he will cave like a house of cards. If he stands up to it, I will sing his praises for at least a day, maybe a whole week… despite the shit he’s doing that is threatening to relapse my rabies.

The title is a bit misleading as I have read elsewhere that the Obama administration has distanced Obama from the selection. They claim that Freeman was entirely Blair’s choice and that Obama was not consulted. In any event we have political theatre here that fosters the illusion of debate and “change”, all the while the real power will be excersized behind the scenes by the likes of Dennis Ross.

    Appalling bio on Ross:

Oh, man, “Dennis Ross”… pissed me off so badly I still haven’t gotten over it. I will try to work up the courage to click your link, Atheo. Aaaaagh!

    And indeed he has:

Thank you, atheo, thank you very much indeed!

And, m., GOD FUCKING DAMMIT ALL TO HELL! I didn’t want to be right. I so did not want it. I’ve been surfing around in the flitosphere to keep from finding out I might have been right, and, agh, thank you, too, thank you so very much indeed for bringing me the awful beautiful truth.

  • Ann says:

Well anticipated, 99. Sadly. Capitol Hill and Congress cowed. If we needed any more proof DC is under occupation -

    EXHIBIT A
    Greenwald (M’s link):

“Prior to the announcement that the Freeman appointment was terminated, Max Blumenthal documented that the man leading the anti-Freeman assault was Steve Rosen, the long-time AIPAC official currently on trial for violations of the Espionage Act in connection with the transmission of classified U.S. information intended for Israel. [that's rich, a man on trial for espionage leads the charge to attack another] Blumenthal also quotes foreign policy analyst Chris Nelson as follows:

Freeman is stuck in the latest instance of the deadly power game long played here on what level of support for controversial Israeli government policies is a “requirement” for US public office. If Obama surrenders to the critics and orders [Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair] to rescind the Freeman appointment to chair the NIC, it is difficult to see how he can properly exercise leverage, when needed, in his conduct of policy in the Middle East. That, literally, is how the experts see the stakes of the fight now under way.

Blumethal also suggested that right-wing Israel fanatics in the U.S. are particularly interested in controlling how intelligence is analyzed due to their anger over the NIE’s 2007 conclusion that Iran had ceased its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

“It’s clear that Freeman isn’t going to be influenced by the lobby,” Jim Lobe, the Washington bureau chief of Inter Press Service, remarked to me. “They don’t like people like that, especially when they’re in charge of products like the NIE. So this is a very important test for them.”

Blumenthal further noted that the leader of the anti-Freeman crusade in the House, Rep. Mark Kirk, is Congress’ top recipient of AIPAC donations. Identically, Greg Sargent previously reported that, in the Senate, “concern” over Freeman was expressed by Sen. Chuck Schumer directly to Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Does anyone doubt that it’s far more permissible in American political culture to criticize actions of the American government than it is the actions of the Israeli Government? Isn’t that rather odd, and quite self-evidently destructive?”

    EXHIBIT B
    Andrew Sullivan:

“There are a couple of things worth noting about this minor, yet major, Washington spat. The first is that the MSM has barely covered it as a news story, and the entire debate occurred in the blogosphere. I don’t know why. But that would be a very useful line of inquiry for a media journalist.

The second is that Obama may bring change in many areas, but there is no possibility of change on the Israel-Palestine question. Having the kind of debate in America that they have in Israel, let alone Europe, on the way ahead in the Middle East is simply forbidden. Even if a president wants to have differing sources of advice on many questions, the Congress will prevent any actual, genuinely open debate on Israel. More to the point: the Obama peeps never defended Freeman. They were too scared. The fact that Obama blinked means no one else in Washington will ever dare to go through the hazing that Freeman endured. And so the chilling effect is as real as it is deliberate.

When Obama told us that the resistance to change would not end at the election but continue every day after, he was right. But he never fought this one. He’s shrewder than I am.”

And all this despite — or perhaps in part because of — much needed and overdue criticism of the zionist entity and its recognised disjunction from US foreign policy interests is being made in an unprecedented fashion.

  • atheo says:

Well, who’da thunkit. “Hope” doesn’t work after all.

It’s fascinating that so many of us can be so desperate as to espy one little glimmer of “change” and erase our knowledge of the entire context of the situation. Hope prevailed over common sense for most of us.

  • 99 says:

Well, that was the ONLY glimmer we had, atheo! There was NO realistic choice. We could have used our votes to identify ourselves as above-it-all or voted the best we could for the remote possibility of helping our fellow humans. We knew it was a slim hope, but we literally could not do better.

I am drowning in the urges to teleport to DC and rip Obama’s ears off right now. I just called him a “dickless mountain of hubris” in public. I ain’t kidding, I’m drowning in the violence of my disapproval. WHY DID WE BOTHER CHANGING FIGUREHEADS!?!” What a monumental waste of time and energy and “hope”!

    FUCK!!!!!!!

Get me off world before I start mowing down forests with the blasts of heat wanting out of my bone marrow just now.

Make me Queen of Planet Earth for just a short while and I promise this shit will go completely away instanter. Everyone will be very, very happy really quickly. Then I’ll just retreat to some queenly cave in the mountains in atonement for all the ASSHOLES I vaporized until I die.

    Ohmmmm. :-(

As you can probably tell, I’m just a little crazy, and, no kidding, Che Guevara should NOT be dead. He should be president. And, goofy as this video is, this song has been playing in my head full blast since clicking on m.’s link above.

They say the toxins are emasculating all our male creatures, and I’m wondering if passing out testosterone patches might not save us….
