Being an expat myself and coming from an undeveloped part of the world, I witness firsthand the enormous amount of energy people invest in order to fit me into a stereotype. And they really fight for it! I’m not supposed to be any different from it otherwise I will hear complaints. Being Latino I am supposed to love salsa - the cheesier the better. I’m supposed to jump and start dancing as soon as the first note comes out of the stereo. I supposed also to be fanatic about football, which I am, but I see it more as a personal preference and part of my experience growing up next to a football field than a law of nature.

But I’d say building stereotypes – and fighting for them – is no privilege of the Westerns or the Enlightened. I had the chance to see myself doing the very same as a Chinese co-worker came for a year assignment. Luckily for me she was around for a year and I learn most of my ideas about China were downright stereotypical. As did she, I imagine. I’d say stereotyping is a common feature among us humans. Some sort of evolutionary tool.

This article takes it to a different level. It takes these oversimplifications to level of cultures in societies and special these intellectuals or Enlightened - as I like to call them. It is proper to denounce it. These stereotypes bring much more harm than the aid they foster.

Those blackface pictures!! Ha ha ha, stunning. Rich Europeans, including Germans, have no idea what it is like in those black African countries. This reminds me of a Danish woman, when visiting New York City, left her baby outside of a restaurant while she ate inside. Her reasoning-she did it in Denmark, so she thought she could do it in the USA. Some of those Europeans are so naive, it borders on stupidity.
