A war movie about US soldiers is supposed to do just that.And not instigate a political debate.

you are completely right jasmin.

there are only a few people alive who still remember what it was like when soldiers were the one’s who died in war.

the experience of american soldiers in iraq is, essentially, nothing – less than a drop in the ocean of human pain that is the iraq war.

if you are incapable of saying anything real about the war, then sure, make a film about US soldiers. . . but to pretend that their story is the story of the war is the worst kind of arrogant dumb blindness.

I don’t agree that a view point limited to one side in a conflict cannot in itself be questioning of that side’s role. I refer Jasmin to the excellent ‘Generation Kill’ which tells the story of a Rolling Stone reporter embedded with a Marine unit in Iraq. The only Iraqis in it are either waving at the passing marines, being shot by them, or shooting at them. There is one regular Iraqi portrayed and he is a opportunistic interpreter who has a low opinion of his countrymen. And yet the series, written by Ed Burns and David Simons of ‘The Wire’ fame manages to question, in every episode, the whole reason they are there, while portraying the marines as flawed human beings fighting a war they don’t understand, struggling with rules of engagement that don’t make sense, rules imposed on them by an inept command. As one character says, “We are just semi-skilled labourers hired to operate machinery.”
