Chris Hedges on the Empire of Illusion

January 13th, 2010 § 1 Comment

Award-winning author and journalist Chris Hedges reads from a collection of essays and articles and discusses his new book, Empire of Illusion: the End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacleduring this December 2009 event which took place at the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center at the New School.  According to Hedges, we live in two societies:

…one, the minority, functions in a print-based, literate world and can cope with complexity and can separate illusion from truth; the other, a growing majority, is retreating from a reality-based world into one of false certainty and magic where serious film and theater, as well as newspapers and books, are being pushed to the margins.

Be sure to also check out Hedge’s two most recent articles on Truthdig: “Wall Street Will Be Back for More” and “The Pictures of War You Aren’t Supposed to See“.
