Regev: It is what Israelis feel
June 7th, 2010 § 5 Comments
According to Rachel Shabi writing for the Guardian, the Israeli government press office distributed the YouTube video clip below to foreign journalists, mocking the victims and supporters of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and glorifying the murder of 9 Turkish human rights activists by Israeli forces. It seems Israel has forgotten that it is supposed to mask the racism at the core of its project. (The video is produced by Jerusalem Post editor and former Netanyahu advisor Caroline Glick’s organization Latma, which is funded by neoconservative Frank Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy. It was distributed by the Israeli embassy and also through the propaganda instant messenger GIYUS)
Not long after distributing the video, the Israeli government apologized, but not without representatives expressing how much they enjoyed it.
Notes Shabi:
The YouTube clip, set to the tune of the 1985 charity single We Are the World, features Israelis dressed as Arabs and activists, waving weapons while singing: “We con the world, we con the people. We’ll make them all believe the IDF (Israel Defence Force) is Jack the Ripper.”
Near the end are the following words:
There’s no people dying, so the best that we can do is create the biggest bluff of all.
According to Press office director Danny Seaman the video was “fantastic” and for Mark Regev, it was even good enough for child viewing material:
I called my kids in to watch it because I thought it was funny…It is what Israelis feel. But the government has nothing to do with it.
No commentary was made about why the government press office would allow such a video to be distributed if it does not agree with the content or what it means for the families of the dead when Israel spokes people praise a clip that makes a mockery out of the violent murder of their loved ones.
