How Israel planned the Flotilla attack

An excellent report from Lia Tarachansky of The Real News.

As the MV Rachel Corrie, the last boat in the Free Gaza Movement’s Flotilla, is being dragged to Israel’s Ashdod port after being boarded and taken over in the early hours of Saturday, Israel continues to react to its Flotilla attack. Protests have been taking place throughout Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories. In the meantime, The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky investigates how Israel prepared for the Flotilla attack, and how the media repeatedly portrayed a connection between the activists and terrorism. After the attack, Israel went on the offensive to prove there was indeed a connection to terrorism. The IDF published a press release saying the activists on board the Mavi Marmara ship that was the site of at least 9 deaths on Monday morning were actually al Qaeda mercenaries. When Tarachansky and journalist Max Blumenthaul questioned the IDF for evidence of this allegation, the IDF said it didn’t have any and changed the title of the press release to “attackers of the IDF soldiers found without identification papers.”

  1. Many bloggers in Israel are contemplating over the choice of location and time to raid the flotillas in international waters:

“One reason why the Isrealis boarded so far off shore. Close inshore means more phones etc working making it easier to send voice/pictures/video. Far offshore limits the communications to specialised gear like sat phones etc.

Perhaps that is why Israel chose to intercept the boats in international waters. But the actual reason is still unknown.”

“As the activists reach their home countries, I am sure we will start receiving more information about what happened. Help us unveil all the pieces of information from the many sides of the story and keep sending us links to perspectives that have not been heard or highlighted.
When planning the operation, IDF placed an emphasis on making sure no updates would leak from the activists during the operation by means of electronic warfare.

Israel was to be the first to deliver news on the turnout of events. Their intent was to block all forms of communication coming from the activist boats and let a group of journalists onboard the Israeli boats be the first to report to the world. To their chagrin, their plan did not succeed.”

This is what an Israeli reporter Amos Harel has written in Haaretz newspaper regarding the mistakes committed in dealing with May 31 flotillas:

The many weeks the navy spent preparing to meet the flotilla…all culminated in a resounding failure. We should be clear:

If Israel’s goal was to “contain” the flotilla and prevent it from triggering a major crisis, we failed utterly and completely

The result, at any rate, was horrific: Civilians were killed, and the protesters threw a commando from the upper deck to lower deck. It’s not just appalling footage, it’s a national humiliation and a blow to Israeli deterrence.

“We were arrogant and complacent,” one officer told Haaretz. “We didn’t anticipate the scale of the resistance and didn’t conduct ourselves accordingly.”
