Gore Vidal, RIP

The great Gore Vidal is no more. One of the greatest prose-stylists of the last 100 years, he had a rapier-like wit, and remained a non-conformist to the end. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate his life than to leave you in Gore’s own company. Here is an archive of Gore Vidal’s writings and media appearances, some of them rare, that PULSE has published over the years. Also, don’t miss this blistering 1986 response to the Norman Podhoretz in which Vidal is identifying predilections, particularly the neoconservatives passionate attachment to Israel, that 17 years later would lead the US to disaster in Iraq.

  1. A lot of people are saying all sorts of things about Gore Vidal’s legacy and what a great man he was. That’s fine. I think he’s written a lot of great works I’ve enjoyed. But I bet many of us don’t realize what he said about Roman Polanski’s rape victim and why we need to be aware of what he said.

    From the Atlantic, 2009.

Interviewer: In September, director Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland for leaving the U.S. in 1978 before being sentenced to prison for raping a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson’s house in Hollywood. During the time of the original incident, you were working in the industry, and you and Polanski had a common friend in theater critic and producer Kenneth Tynan. So what’s your take on Polanski, this many years later?

Vidal: I really don’t give a f**k. Look, am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she’s been taken advantage of?

    IMO, horrible taste.

He also went on to bash southern Culture when explaining about Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky.

    Interviewer: Do you believe Clinton?

Interviewer: He was talking Southern. In the South, sex is when you put it in and pump away and there’s a danger of a baby. That’s “sexual relations.” Anything else is what we called in school “messing around.” And all Southern boys messed around.

I don’t like Bill Clinton any more than anyone at this website. But to bash southern culture like that, defend a convicted rapist, and trash a rape survivor is in poor taste, IMO.
