Why Kill Bin Laden Now?

Gareth Porter: Domestic politics dictated decision to assassinate bin Laden, not national security. Also, in the National Journal, Tim Fernholz and Jim Tankersley estimate that the pursuit of Bin Laden cost the US $3 trillion over the past 15 years.

  1. The history of our country proves one bedrock principle. We do not appease tyrants or pirates for the potential savings in human life or expense of federal budget. Since the pirates of Tripoli were considered an expensive nuisance by European super powers, the USA loaded up some marines and went to clean out the nest. Hang the cost, and hang the pirates. I don’t care about the cost of getting Bin Laden. I do care that one of military had been ordered to pull the trigger as a executioner. We should have brought him in to be put on display.

  2. I thought exactly the same thing myself..why now?
Just when things are going so well in the Middle East..or at least moving in the right direction..secular movement demanding Democracy and getting rid of ruthless dictators.
I could come to one conclusion domestic politics.
