‘In the previous 16 years, most of the envoys for the president in the Mid East have been openly and publicly committed to Israel’s side. Some of them have been professional lobbyists for Israel.’
Jimmy Carter, the former US president, has said any future permanent Israeli-Palestinian agreement had to include Hamas, the Palestinian movement that controls Gaza.
Carter also told Al Jazeera’s Riz Khan on Wednesday that US presidents were unable or unwilling to take on Israel’s supporters in the US, but said he had high hopes for George Mitchell, the new US Middle East envoy.
I’ve been pounding on Obama’s first call to Abu Mazen and his horrifying statements about how he wishes to proceed, the part about Israeli and PA people at the crossings, sounding every bit as desiring of ignoring the election of Hamas as his predecessors. I’m appalled. Now here’s Carter talking about Hamas having to be part of it, as he has insisted for long, and which they certainly do! And the amazing news that Hamas willing even to let Abu Mazen make the deal as long as all the Palestinians ratify it makes me even madder that Obama was too spineless to recognize them to begin with.
Maybe some of his vaunted “change” will come to the sickening Israel/Palestine atrocity, but it seems apt to be so psychedelic that we won’t realize it’s slipped in until it’s already done.
I’m for a one state solution: Palestine.
